About Us

The Lab Sports Academy of St. Maarten is a Nonprofit Organization whose mission is to keep our youth off the streets and away from drugs and crime related activities. We firmly believe if we can keep one child off the streets through our constructive programs, not only is there one less delinquent, that child is on a successful path towards becoming a good citizen.

about

Les Brown, Sports Director of LAB Sports Academy, founded this multi-sport youth organization in 1996. Most people who know Les would say “Les Brown” is synonymous with the term “sports” and for his dedicated commitment, the Queen of the Nederlands awarded him the Order of Orange.

Les is eminently qualified. Currently the President of the Sint Maarten Athletic Association, he has served in various youth and sports related government positions and helped craft St. Maarten’s first SPORTS POLICY.

An accomplished athlete, Les participated in the European Championships, won a Silver Medal in the Kingdom Games, and later helped organize the first Kingdom Games to be held on St. Maarten.

Les taught health and Fitness at St. Maarten University and successfully completed C.I.O.S. (Central Institute for Development of Sports Instructors) in the Nederlands.

The future and well-being of St. Maarten’s youth have been and remain a key focus of his life’s work.

We ask for your support of this vital and beneficial organization to our island.

Giving Back

Physical Education in the form of rehabilitation with in Point Blanche Prison.

Introduction

We need to revisit the law book and recap why people go to prison. And treat these persons as prisoners. Make them feel that they did something wrong and are being punished for this behavior. We must constantly remind them of their fault and that they need to pay for their wrong doing. While doing so we must be aware of the fact that we create a safe environment for all involved in this process. We must also be aware that we must work as a team and are responsible for each other as well for the detained under the human rights laws, rules and regulations.

Observation

The current prison system in point blanche is in need of a strenuous overhaul. The inhabitance and cases are too diverse. The personnel does not have the expertise needed to deal with the different cases properly. The institute is not build to deal with this diversity. We are in dire need of better detention areas for special cases. We need specialists who know what to do and how to assist the different cases. Our current personnel needs to be retested and upgraded. Many have fallen into a layback/ less a fair style of working. Come and go as they please, call in sick when the pressure gets rough. Many are just here for the job and pay.
